Engage China Welcomes Continuation of U.S.-China Dialogue

WASHINGTON, DC - Engage China, a coalition of eleven financial services trade associations united in support of high-level engagement with China with an emphasis on continued financial sector reform in China, released the following statement on the announcement of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue:

"Engage China welcomes the continuation of a high-level U.S.-China dialogue. The U.S.-China economic relationship is the most important bilateral trade relationship in the world today. The current global economic crisis vividly underscores the interconnectivity of the world's first and third largest economies, the importance of avoiding protectionist measures, and the clear value to both nations of continued high-level communication between the U.S. and China."

"A high-level dialogue greatly enhances economic cooperation between the United States and China - to the betterment of the people of both nations. It provides a vital forum for leaders to address the major economic issues facing both nations and to discuss further modernization and reform of China's financial markets.

"The coalition strongly believes that continued reform and modernization is important to China achieving its economic goals of maintaining high rates of growth and job creation, building a more services-based, consumer-driven economy, reducing poverty, improving safety and the quality of life, financing infrastructure, and ensuring a more equitable distribution of opportunity and prosperity. In this regard, the Coalition notes China's commitment to continue the development and reform of its financial system, as announced in the White House statement on bilateral meeting with President Hu of China.

"We commend President Obama and President Hu for their leadership. Engage China looks forward to working with Secretaries Geithner and Clinton to achieve our goals of financial sector modernization in China through engagement."
